Gautrain Rail Network – South Africa

Gautrain-Rail-Network-PA-Testing

Gautrain is South Africa’s new premier rail network connecting Pretoria with central Johannesburg and its airport.

Acoustics Plus were contracted by the communications company working for Gautrain’s owner to design and test the PA-voice alarm system for Gautrain’s ten new stations.

The brief

  • Design the public address and voice alarm system for Gautrain’s stations and platforms

  • Carry out an acoustic computer modelling study to verify that the proposed acoustic design will meet the acoustic design criteria specified in the performance constraints

  • Parameter prediction including reverberation time, sound pressure level and speech transmission index

  • Post commissioning electro-acoustic performance assessment of intelligibility and sound pressure level.

The acoustic design, installation and commissioning had to be delivered within a tight schedule, with a number of stations ready for operation in time for the 2010 Football World Cup.

The results

  • Installed PA-voice alarm system for first four train stations met the performance requirements specified by the operator. Commissioning of these stations took place under a tight schedule one week prior to opening.

  • Design work is continuing on Phase 2 of the project with a proposed installation and commissioning completion earmarked for the beginning of 2011.
